Ashtanga Yoga is like the essence of an ideal practice which was in the beginning (as early students say), practised in a bit different way - eventually more smooth and open for individual variations. At this time only few students where practising in the old Mysore Shala - today we are hundreds of students every day.
Obviously, it was necessary - for keeping the tradition - to kind of generalize it with a code - with the "Count".
Therefore the Ashtanga Led Classes with the count have over time substituted the more individual teaching in the Mysore Classes.
As the series is an ideal of a potential practice, many think of Ashtanga today as a rigid practice.
Actually it is far from that, specially when we remember the roots of Vinyasa Krama: Every posture has an order of how to come from the basic to the advanced.
In this way - as Pattabhi Jois said - Ashtanga Yoga is for everyone!
Therefore we approach Ashtanga individually with explaining elements - like its roots, the Vinyasa Krama Method, for understanding breath, bandha & sequencing, or with BKS Iyengar probs for clear directed strength and alignment - while sticking tight to the modern Mysore flow!
